The Linda P. Brodell, M.D. and Robert T. Brodell, M.D. Chair in Dermatology honors the tireless work of Dr. Robert Brodell to transform dermatologic education and patient care in Mississippi.
In 2012, moved by the incredible dermatologic needs in Mississippi and the opportunity to make a profound difference, Drs. Linda and Robert Brodell made the decision to leave the comfort of their hometown and private practice in Ohio and move to Jackson, Mississippi to establish the Department of Dermatology at the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC).
As the first department chair, Dr. Robert Brodell’s vision and tireless work ethic led the department to rapid growth and prosperity. Today, the department includes 14 faculty members, three nurse practitioners and welcomes 15 residents and two fellows each year who cover all subspecialties with superb, mission-driven and patient-focused care. The department sees over 37,000 patients and conducts 6,000 skin pathology reads annually, while also treating another 4,000 patients at the G.V. (Sonny) Montgomery Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center. In total, 33 dermatology residents have graduated from the program, with about half staying to practice in Mississippi. Dr. Brodell also launched groundbreaking programs that focused on the needs of all Mississippians across the state, not just those in Jackson. Under his leadership, programs were established to increase rural access to care through a satellite office in Louisville, MS and free monthly clinics in Rolling Fork, MS. In addition, a rural residency training position and a state-of-the-art teledermatology program provide support for rural primary care physicians along with other projects which have become models for programs around the nation.
Please join us in honoring Dr. Brodell’s contributions to UMMC, patients around the state of Mississippi and the many students he’s helped by making a gift to the Linda P. Brodell, M.D. and Robert T. Brodell, M.D. Chair in Dermatology today. This endowed fund will be used to support the Department of Dermatology, to which Dr. Brodell gave so much, in perpetuity.
